Join Our Team

Our team is made up of highly trained and experienced volunteers, ready to respond to emergencies in some of the most challenging environments.

All of our active hill members are skilled in navigation, steep-ground work, search techniques, technical rope work, field communications, and first aid. These core skills form the foundation of every rescue we carry out.

Many team members also hold nationally recognised qualifications in specialist roles. This includes expertise in casualty care, advanced first aid, emergency driving, and swift water rescue. Each of these roles requires advanced training, technical equipment, and in some cases dedicated vehicles ensuring we can respond effectively to a wide range of incidents, wherever they occur.

This expertise doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built through ongoing training, funded by public support.

Weekend training in the Beacons

Behind Every Rescue

Training is at the heart of everything we do.

A significant part of life in mountain rescue is dedicated to developing and maintaining the skills needed to respond safely and effectively. Our team trains every Monday evening and during the first full weekend of each month in the Brecon Beacons.

There is a great deal to learn, even for experienced mountaineers.

New team members begin with basic training in search techniques, which can take around 12 weeks depending on individual experience. From there, training progresses into areas such as casualty care, technical rope work, navigation, and operating in challenging environments.

It typically takes 12 to 24 months to become a fully operational team member.

And even then, training never stops.

Mountain rescue is constantly evolving. New techniques, equipment, and challenges mean our team continues to train regularly to stay ready for any situation.

Join Us

We’re always looking for people aged 18 and over to join the team, whether in a support role or as an operational rescue member.

Being part of mountain rescue is about more than responding to callouts. It’s about supporting your community, building lasting friendships, and developing valuable, life-saving skills.

You’ll challenge yourself, learn something new, and gain a real sense of purpose, while making a difference when it matters most.

Building Skills, Saving Lives

Operational members are at the heart of our emergency response.

To join, you’ll need:

  • A good level of fitness

  • The ability to follow instruction

  • Strong teamwork and communication skills

  • The availability to commit to a regular, intensive (and rewarding) training programme

Previous mountain and climbing experience is helpful, but not essential, we provide full training.

Get Involved Beyond the Hills

Support members play a vital role behind the scenes.

There are no strict entry requirements, just a willingness to contribute your time and energy. Whether helping with fundraising, administration, or events, every contribution helps keep the team operational. Join our team

Next Steps

Becoming part of the team is a commitment, and we want to make sure it’s right for you as well as for us.

The process includes:

  • An informal interview to get to know you

  • A pre-assessment hill day with experienced team members

This gives you the chance to understand what’s involved, experience the team environment, and ask any questions.

Following this, we’ll let you know if you’ve been successful.

Team casualty packing

What happens next?

After a successful pre-assessment, you’ll be invited to join our Basic Skills Training Programme.

This stage typically lasts 6 to 12 months, depending on your experience and development. You’ll learn essential search and rescue techniques, ensuring you are safe, capable, and ready to progress.

At the end of the programme, you’ll be assessed for operational readiness. If successful, you’ll begin attending callouts under the supervision of experienced team members, gaining real, hands-on experience.

Becoming a Rescue Member

Once you’ve completed the basic skills stage, training progresses to more advanced areas, including:

  • Technical rescue

  • Advanced casualty care

  • Working safely near water

This prepares you for full Rescue Membership and opportunities to take on additional responsibilities, such as Party Leader or specialist roles.

Mountain rescue is a journey of continuous learning. We are committed to creating a team where people feel welcome, supported, and able to develop, regardless of their background or starting point.

Every step ensures our volunteers are safe, skilled, and ready to respond when it matters most.

Our team is made up entirely of volunteers, but the equipment, vehicles, and training we rely on are funded by donations.

Every contribution helps ensure we are ready when the call comes.
