A large part of our time in Mountain Rescue is spent training. We train every Monday night and the first full weekend of every month in the Brecon Beacons.
There is a great deal to learn, even for experienced mountaineers. Basic training for searching duties can take as little as 12 weeks depending on the skills of the individual. More advanced training follows. It can take a further 12 to 24 months to become a rescue member. In reality, training never stops as methods and equipment are constantly evolving.
Thinking about joining ?
We are always looking for people over the age of 18 to become members, either in a support role or as operational rescue members. Being a member of the team means that not only are you assisting your community through our activities, but you will also be gaining a sense of well-being by engaging in team training and learning a host of new skills with other like-minded people.
To become a support member all you need is to contribute as much free time as you can.
If you wish to become an operational rescue member then you will need at least some if not all of the following attributes:
- a good level of fitness
- ability to follow instruction
- good teamwork
- communication skills
- availability to attend an intensive and demanding (but enjoyable!) training program.
Prospective members attend an interview and pre-assessment hill day. This is a formal day with experienced trained members of the team that allows us to get to know you and for you to find out more about us as well as discovering the commitment required to be in the team. Following this you will be advised if you are successful.
.
What happens next?
Following a successful pre-assessment you will be invited to join the basic skills training program. This training can last from 6 months to 12 months depending on the needs of individuals. The basic skills program concentrates on basic search and rescue techniques and ensures that prospective members are capable and safe to progress to the next level within the team. Once all elements of the program have been completed an assessment for progression to operational membership is carried out. If passed – attendance at team callouts under the supervision of an experienced members is allowed.
Becoming a Rescue member
Once the basic skills module is completed training will focus on more advanced elements of mountain rescue, e.g. technical rescue, advanced casualty care or working near water. This training allows you to progress to Rescue Member and other roles within the team such as Party Leader.
